Volunteering

Ignoring everything that I was taught in the Navy - Never volunteer
for anything!! - I've taken the plunge and become the duty coordinator
for the division. This will mean picking up the paperwork for the
duties and doing my best with the manning of these. If I can't get any
volunteers then I'll have the unpleasant task of ringing the
organisers and letting them know we can't make it. But so far, OK it
is only a week, I've managed to get cover. The 12th of September could
be interesting as we have three duties slated for the day. One will
probably have to lose out. Also two overlapping duties require an
ambulance so we may have to call on Shaftesbury to help out at the
Speedway.

Training is still slow. I've got a Patient Handling course and some
radio updates to do in September. These are the final two pre reqs for
the Ambulance Aid in November. For October I have a driving assessment
to allow me to drive the ambulance. Heres hoping I pass all these.

Last Saturday was the Speedway World Cup Final here in Poole. As there were only two Poole members at the duty and P was on the ambulance I got stung as duty officer. Well funny. As probably the most junior person there I got to stroll around with "Duty Officer" flashes - sweet. Relatively busy night picking people out of the fence and managed to get my ugly mug on telly quite a few times. No casualties as such but enough interest to stop the boredom.

Wednesday night was completely different. Back down to pleb. Just crawled on to the centre green. Bucketing down. No fallers. Meeting abandoned after 13 heats.

Speedway World Cup - The Run Off

First duty in a little while. As I was on call for the day job I had
to stay off the centre green and mix with the crowd. Got asked about a
wasp sting - could see nothing so reckon it was probably a hover fly
that just scared the bloke. Also got asked about a knee pain whilst
walking through the crowd. Nothing major at all. Was standing close to
the ambulances when two riders fell off. The crew jumped in and
started up just in case. I asked if they wanted a third man on board
and was told to just get in. Woo Hoo!! Seems I have arrived now. All
the sly comments about crewing the wagon if they would train me have
worked. I'm now being put in for my driving assessment with the
Fundamental Care and Ambulance Aid courses I need to be a full crew
member. The Super has mentioned getting out on duties as a third crew
so obviously the message will be getting around.
Anyway i'm out on the centre for Saturday night as strangely we have
had more volunteers for last night - a week night.
